I recently installed Jiffy Dos on my 1541 II, I will be installing it on my 2 1571's as well as on
my C128 and my C64 w/ 1541..

 1) Does anyone know of a link that shows the intalllation procedures? :pucko:
I figured it out on the 1541 II, so I imagine it will be just as easy on all the others,
but it would be nice for referance.

 2) I also would like to get  the instructions for Jiffy Dos?

 3) When done is there a test to check the drives to see that it is up and running correctly?
( this might be a dumb question ):P

Welcome to the world of less waiting to load programs.  ;)

I have some of the installation instruction sheets for JiffyDOS, on loan from Lord Ronin of ACUG, which I intend to scan in and make available for download.  But, I haven't gotten around to doing it yet.  The JiffyDOS installation for the 1541-II is as complex as it gets, though, since you have to install a chip AND a switch.  So if you figured that out on your own, you should have no problem installing it in your 1571's, which is just a chip.  Oh, wait, the C128 installation IS more complex...  There are TWO chips and a switch.  But I think you can figure it out.  ;)

I have already scanned in the JiffyDOS manual, which you can download on my website.  :)

Yes.  Once you have the chips installed in your computer and disk drive, when you turn the computer on, you'll see the JiffyDOS message instead of the standard Commodore message.  Then you can type @ all by itself and press return to read the error channel on drive #8.  When you do that at bootup, you'll see a JiffyDOS message on the error channel instead of the standard Commodore message.  Type @#9 and press return to change to drive #9, then type @ by itself and press return to read the error channel on that drive.  Repeat this procedure for drive #10 and so on.

If you don't have JiffyDOS on your computer yet and want to see if a drive has JiffyDOS, you'll have to type in the short program in your disk drive's user's manual to read the error channel.

Hope this helps!  :)

I ran the error channel tests on my 1571's with the installed Jiffy Dos, they read v6.0 do the actual v6.01s read 6.01? or did I get shafted on my purchase?

My 1541 II reads  v5.0 1541 ( so i didn't get the latest version on this chip... also does the 1541 II read 1541 II or
1541??

If memory serves, the 6.01 chips will read as 6.0 on the error channel.  Not that it really matters...  I have 1571's that read as both 6.0 and 5.0, and I can't tell any difference in performance between the two versions.  The only thing where I have noticed a difference is in the JiffyDOS installed in the computer.  There are some minor differences between 5.0 and 6.0 there.  For example, in 6.0 you just press F1 to get a directory of the currently selected drive.  In 5.0, you have to press F1 followed by return.  Also, in 5.0 if you select a different device number and then press the reset button on a C128, whatever device you had selected will still be active.  In 6.0, pressing reset will switch back to device 8 as the active drive.  The differences I've noticed are minor, and the most important thing, the speed of load times, seems to be the same no matter what version.

And yes, the 1541-II will read as 1541 on the error channel.  Same goes for 1541C's.  :)

Try to find the JiffyDos your looking for on Ebay or find someone with an EPROM burner and an adapter board.

This guy will take your order and your money, then will not deliver to you (http://store.cmdrkey.com/agora.cgi).

It should be pointed out, however, that Maurice DOES legally own the rights to JiffyDOS, as least as far as anyone knows. He says he does, anyway. If so, burning your own or buying any ROMs that weren't originally obtained from CMD or Click Here is an act of piracy. I'm just sayin'.

The tacit rule in the community is that if something is available, it's hands-off. If it isn't, do what you like. When Maurice stopped shipping product (he forgot to stop collecting money BTW), the burning your own JiffyDOS season was open. I tell people to feel free to burn their own JiffyDOS and when you do, send an email to Maurice with your address and ask him to send you an invoice for it. If he does, pay it. If not, well, you tried.

The day Maurice decides to start acting responsibly is the day he'll get a $1000+ order from me that includes JiffyDOS for all my machines that currently have home-burned EPROMs.

Would you like me to hold that $1000 in escrow for you until that day comes, Golan? :)

Oops, at the Nov. 3-4 Vintage Computer Festival 10.0, our FCUG table was selling a bunch of genuine, labeled JiffyDOS chips (C64 Kernal with switch, 1541 with switch, 1581, 1571, and C128 chips and switch) that I had found in a former user's collection.  They were $1 each.  Needless to say, they were all scooped up in a few minutes.

Lovely. Did you consider offering these deals to the active Commodore community rather than a bunch of strangers who happened to bet at VCF?
