Does anyone have a copy of the Omni 128 BBS program?  I've always wanted to see it in action and how it compares to Centipede and C-Net 128.
My rig: C-128 w/JD SCPU, uIEC/SD, CMD-HD (500 MB), CMD-HD ZIP drive, CMD RAMLink, 1750XL 2 MB REU, FD-2000, 1581, Turbo232

I'd also be interested in seeing this...  :)

Ask Michael.
The mailbox is down (I bought his old hardware) but maybe he has a copy of the original program: http://omni128.de/National/Mailbox_ge.html

Hoi Gang:

Yeah I have factory distribution of Brian Bells's Omni 128 <reg #65> I'll delete a FD-200 disk full of bitches at this time. Ran the Vacuum Tube BBS under Omni for several years. Till Dr. Midi smegged us on 1/1/00ce. Without a notice or as so much as a by your leave. There are some hacks out there to keep the system alive. mad_max1@netzero.net has some of the source code for Omni and made some helpfull additives. Such as an online SCPU on/off switch for the caller.

IMNSH opinion. This is not the system for anyone just starting out to use. Can delineate that more if there are those that are interested. I did it as my first real online BBS. Man was I frelled and not everything I needed came in the distribution packet. Like the BBS lister as a simple example. Nor was there a lot of help in the network for beginners as well. Add to that I paid for a manual, still waiting after 12 years for it. >:(

Lord Ronin is the President of the Anything Commodore User Group in Astoria, Oregon.  He has an interesting way with words, to be sure.  ;)

Basically, for those who didn't understand, he said that he was a registered owner of Omni 128 BBS, which he ran a BBS on for several years, until the whole thing crashed on Jan. 1st, 2000 because it wasn't Y2K-compliant, and the author disappeared and didn't help any registered owners with the problems they experienced.  He also says that Omni 128 BBS is not a good system for a beginner SysOp to use.  Got it now?  ;)

hehehehe...  After a year of reading LR's e-mails and his articles in The Village Green (ACUG's newsletter), I think I've become rather fluent in LordRoninese.  ;)

Pearsoe, I was just curious...  Were you ever able to find a copy of this program to try out?

I actually just got my hands on a working copy of Omni 128.  The docs are horrible but I finally managed to get it up and running.  The only problem with the copy is the built in terminal program seems to be corrupt.  Trying to find a working version of it.

Sounds interesting. What's it like?

I ran an Omni BBS for quite awhile.  I had made images of the diskettes, too (.d81's).  No, the BBS is not for the beginner and the documents assume you know what you are doing.  It was a great network as everythign was automated and the updates were automated too.  It worked, looked, and functioned much like a PC style BBS.  I loved it, personally.  However, I have no C128 at the moment (sorry) and my cbm images are somewhere upstairs.  If it helps, I can try to find my backups if they're still needed.  I think it was Brian Bell who developed the Omni system and the network.  If he's no longer around perhaps getting this out would be a great start of something new :)

We ran the Tundra BBS with it.

Cheers,

I'd love to get copies of those disk images & the docs if you've scanned them.

tnx.

Now that the midterms are finished up with and other such things that take priorities, I'll be looking for them this weekend.  As for the Doc's, well...  you're on your own.  there were no doc's that came with the BBS other than a few sheets of printed text that gave you the directory listings of where things should go and what settings are what within the BBS.  The Documents was one of the 'voids to fill' for the BBS system and no-one really created them.  I still have to say, that this was one of the best and most powerful bbs systems available for the 128.  I wish that it came into existence earlier than it did because the network and the automation for the forums was outstanding.   What I remember from most ppl back in the day was that it was too similar to those IBuM BBS's that were around.  I'll do what I can and post them on my ftp.

Cheers,

C

Thanks cbmguy.  If you could scan in those doc sheets, that would be very cool. :)  (it's kinda hard to run a board if you don't have any hints on setting it up. :D)

I found some of the texts that were distributed with Omni, I also found my PC 1581 diskette reading/writing software, but ran out of time trying to locate the actual BBS diskettes.  Sorry.  I'll give it another go this Sunday.

Cheers,

I look forward to it.  Thanks!

Sorry for the wait on this.  I've been busy mod'ing this 128d that I received.  I'll be getting the xmas stuff out of storage and I'll be looking out for the Omni BBS diskettes--there in the same area if I remember right.  I'll keep you posted as to where they can be downloaded (if the diskettes are still readable).

Thanks for the update cbmguy.  It's appriciated.

Sorry for the wait.  I still haven't gotten a chance to re-look for it.  I started a few things and that's where the time went.  Add the fact that is was -32 (-47 with the wind chill) and I never quite got out to the garage.  I'll try it again this weekend for you tho.
