Well, I tried it... battle after battle to get there (wasnt 64HDDs fault... numerous issues trying to get a DOS based PC...ugh).  Anyway, it works flawlessly.  Feels weird working with what is basically a new C= harddrive. Long filename support got me though.. I copied my D64 library out to a CD-ROM, and then onto the PC, but apparently the CD copy stripped away all the long filename stuff.  Vista gives you two CD creation options - readable on all machines, or open session - readable on XP and above.  Absolutely amazing work those guys did on the software.  Anyone have any advice or tips on using 64HDD?  Am anxious to see how GEOS handles it.

I do have one question... in the situation im in, I often have D64 files that come up as:

689  "$SOMEDI#1.D64"    D64

...where the pound sign is actually the pi character.  Of course this represents what MS-DOS knows as the tilde character.  But trying to load or attach to this, using the pi character wont work.  Any ideas or do I need to go in and rename the file? (Trying to avoid that, as I have alot of these...ugh)

Replying to myself... I found that if I do:

a$="$SOMEDI" + chr$(126) + "1"
load a$, 8

that will work.  But still...ugly... :(

Uh...  "Those guys" is one guy...  Nick Coplin...

I bought the Pro version of 64HDD and a Turbo/XE cartridge from Nick about a year ago (he was offering a package deal at the time).  I had wanted to use it as a hard drive for my BBS, but it didn't work out.  As far as I know, no one has been successful at getting 64HDD to work in a BBS setup.  Anyway...  I eventually gave up, and sold the 64HDD Pro and Turbo/XE cartridge on eBay.  Luckily, I got back about what I paid for it.  :)

Likely due to lack of relative files would be my guess.  But with all the space you have, creating a fast (enough) indexed file access mechanism would be easy. We talked awhile back about writing a new BBS for the 128, which would have included more recent hardware developments, but it kind of died.  Also, point taken on Nick.  Pretty impressive work for just one guy.  Hope he manages to add rel files and fastload support, or open the software up so others can work on it.  Kinda confuses me sometimes how software like this is closed source...the 64/128 in many ways, helped to define open source software with the large PD libraries, magazine type-ins, and built in languages.  If they were making a living on these things, I could see it, but I dont think the market is big enough.

Buy his parallel cable and you'll get blazing speed. It's tops on my hardware-to-buy list right now. (Sorry, Mangelore!)

Actually, I think it's time I bought a parallel cable for my 64HDD Pro setup as well :)
