When I first started this little community I didn't really expect it to take off as well as it has - however, it's outgrown the ability for me to run it effectively from here....  so...  I'm in the process of registering the domain name "www.commodore128.org" (easy to remember!) & will be moving everything to a hosted site shortly.

The hosting package I've chosen provides 500 email accounts, so I'll be able to offer any member who wants one an email address ending in @commodore128.org (all free naturally).

More updates to come....

Glad to see its here to stay, Lance.  And you've done a great job with the board.  Do you know how to add RSS to the board? I was thinking up a way to RSS usenet comp.sys.cbm post headers....mmmm... or even somehow tie the forum to that newsgroup in some non-intrusive fashion. Myself, I use google's groups to post to comp.sys.cbm, but if I had a front end through this system, Id probably not use google for that at all.  How's your PHPscripting? ;)

RSS is already available - but only 'outwards' - I'm guessing you mean feed usenet posts _into_ the forums (& vice versa) ? It is possible - gimme some time to see what I can code.

cheers,

Good news indeed Lance - any ideas when you are going to move over? are you planning any new features ?

Blacklord

Moving shortly (within the next couple of weeks) - as for new features, I'm alway tinkering about the edges! :) What do you guys want to see ?

I would like to see more code.  Basically, perhaps a feature that people can use to add their useful code snippets, regardless of the language used really.  As long as it's for the 128.    Slowly but surely build a good huge codebase of code. :-) maybe a place to feature complete applications / games too.

I've done a lot of work so far on developing a portal, the forums will still be there (obviously!), but I wanna give the the 128 a proper site (along the lines of say, c64.org or AmigaNews). Obviously new releases will be a problem :)

Another thing on offer will be sub-domains, so people who have 128 related sites can add them into a single community. A few other ideas I'm toying with as well.....

cheers,

Lance,

I just want to say it's great what you've been doing for the 128.  Since this site went up I think you've really caused a mini-rennaisance on the 128.

Stephane Richard

I completely second what plbyrd just said :-).  Completely true from what I'm seeing on my side too :-).

Even got one of my friends to start an emulator and have fun just by telling him that's what I was doing ;-).

Thanks! I'm amazed that in the 4 months or so such a dedicated band of people have pulled themselves out of the woodwork. And I notice the topics range all over the place too. It's you guys who've built the board - I just created the meeting place ;)

But I have great plans for future expansion of the site (hence the domain to start with) - the question is, what do you fellows want out of the site ?

My plans are (to start with) :

A full out portal - obviously news items are a little less thin on the ground than for the C64, but other items can be covered.
A marketplace (Commodore generally, C128 specifically)
A knowledge base - gathering together in  one place as much collected knowledge as possible & presenting it in a mini-Wiki
A 'proper' file area - I'm surprised just how much is out there & how much the members themselves have uploaded (& downloaded too!)
A code base - pull together as many coding fragments as possible that are related to the 128

Over to guys for further suggestions......

Wow, so far that list is awesome.  Excellent ideas  in there.  IT's gonna be great.

What to add.  wow, great question.  One thing, maybe, as part of the knowledge base, maybe a category on it's own.  would be a Learning Center  when people can find tutorials on how to do specific things (could be related/linked to the codebase perhaps) in any language available of course.

Another might be to have a Reviews and Evaluation section.  there's 169 games, 53 geos things 17 programming tools, that people still interested in commodore 128 might like to read about.

All these along with the market place might make a good combination for an online e-zine or maybe more full fledged magazine (no specific monthly release, when there's enough stuff, we release it, no schedule, just something :-).

my two cents ;-)  but wow, this will be great.

As a quick side note, I have some books for the 128 (in txt and PDF format) that might be useful, where can I put them?  in the text files section of the downloads?

Yup!

Stephane Richard

Just so everyone knows, I couldn't upload them cause they are too big (i didn't notice the file size limit for uploads) ... so I sent an email to Lance with links to them (i uploaded them to my server)...when he gets them, perhaps he can add them up.

they are the "Commodore 128 Programmer's Reference Guide"  and "Mapping the Commodore 128" think it might be useful :-)

Changed the upload limit in php.ini - it's been increased to 16mb - you shouldn't have a problem now!

cheers,
