I recall those things.  At least yours doesn't appear to have the flimsy Alps drive mechanism.
x86?  We ain't got no x86.  We don't need no stinking x86!

Uh... All 1570's have an Alps mechanism.  Most of them have brown wearing through the off-white paint (like this one does) because Commodore just painted over the front end of the Alps mechanisms that were being used in 1541's.

If you're thinking about the mechanisms with the turning lever door as the "flimsy ones", those are the Newtronics mechanisms.

indeed, the mechs are just painted brown ones :)

I have some krylon fusion here that pretty closely matches, but I just cant bring myself to paint over the mech - it seems so novel to me :)

Yeah, I got it backwards.  I guess I have been away from this stuff too long.  I now recall that the Alps stuff would fall apart if you looked at it wrong.  I also recall that the mechanisms that were in the two SFD-1001 drives I had back in the day were made by Panasonic.  They proved to be very reliable once I fitted cooling fans to the drive cases.

My SFD-1001s worked fine as long as I didn't stack them or pile stuff around them. They did run warm, though. I was tempted to use them to keep my coffee warm, but that would have blocked the vents. Let's say "marginal" for the ventilation in those.

...not to mention the risk of dripping liquid through those vents!  Yikes!   :o
