GEOS Megapatch 3 ?

Hiya,

Just ran across a reference for this, it's available for 64 and 128 .. but what does it actually do ?  Anyone have it and can explain ?

Yes, I have it.  It was demoed at a FCUG meeting.  Consider it a really big enhancement to the GEOS o.s. but less than a new o.s., which Wheels or WiNGs are.

Does anyone know if there's a site someplace that talks about the various forks of GEOS and which is better for a given hardware setup and/or usage purpose? Logically Click Here Software would have been the obvious candidate, but we all know that isn't happening.

Well, yes. What else would I have meant? As you point out, GEOS does not come with utensils.

Ah, GEOS and its enhancements/variants ("forks" as was mentioned).  Throw into the mix TopDesk, Megapatch, and even WiNGs, and there is quite an essay to write.  Let me see if I can get together some kind of comprehensible summary of all of these.

Apparently there's now that GEOS 3.3 thing mentioned in another thread to consider, too. (Why that would be called 3.3 if it's a '64 port of the Plus4's GEOS 3.5, I do not get. Whatever.) I'm really looking forward to whatever you come up with about this. Thanks for putting in the effort!

Hi Mark,

I have MegaPatch128 V3.0 and it is very nice.
Marcus Kanet and Wolfgang Grimm are the programmers at MP64/128.
But MP64/128 is not freeware this time! Mr. Kanet silence this time and nobody now's when it is freeware.

Unfortunately, that is the case.  At least, the demo can be downloaded (legally).

Ich habe letzte Woche noch mal mit Wolfgang Grimm telefoniert.
Er selbst hat keine Einwände dagegen, daß MegaPatch weiterkopiert wird.
Er kann es aus rechtlichen Gründen nur nicht zum Download freigeben, da auch Markus Kanet Rechte an MegaPatch hat und sich nicht dazu äußert.

Mit Klagen oder Abmahnungen wegen illegalen Kopien muß seiner Meinung nach aber niemand rechnen, er hat Kein Interesse daran und kann sich auch nicht vorstellen, daß sich Markus in irgendeiner Weise geschädigt sehen würde.

Soweit die Stellungnahme von Wolfgang Grimm...

If I understand correctly, Wolfgang has no problem releasing it as freely-distributable, but Markus cannot be found or will not say anything.  Is that correct?

Robert, I'm still eagerly awaiting your summary of the many different variants of GEOS. It doesn't need to be a doctoral thesis, it just needs to say what there is and the distinguishing characteristics.

I also agree with dmackey828 -- I am a little puzzled by how little information about GEOS is actually out there on the 'net. Even the Usenet newsgroup comp.os.geos, largely moribund though it is, appears to be solely focussed on the later PC variant.

Most of the information I've seen about GEOS is in the classic C= magazines of the 1980's.  Then there are the varied books about GEOS, and of course, in the thick GEOS manuals.

I'm interested in what you said about books about GEOS. I have the GEOS technical manual and I've seen references to a Data Becker book about the innards of the OS, but does anyone know where to look for information about what was added/improved/changed in later revisions of GEOS (v2, v3, etc.)? I guess that goes along with my earlier question about the differences between versions, but I can't really ask a more accurate question until I know enough to frame it.

So far I know there are versions of GEOS for C64, C128, and Plus4 -- quite apart from the Apple II variety -- and there are various deskTop replacements such as TopDesk, and also things I don't know enough to classify such as MegaPatch, Wheels and WiNGs. The OS went through major revisions 1-3 before it forked so many times version numbering stopped being meaningful. I'm sure you can see why I'm so eager for clarification! At my present level of knowledge, it would be almost futile to try using the copy of GeoProgrammer I downloaded yesterday. How would I know what API is available? The manual only covers GEOS v1.

You are correct; it is a deskTop replacement.

MegaPatch gives several enhancements to GEOS.

...Wheels...

Wheels is a different and newer OS which can use most GEOS applications.  Its mininum requirements are a disk drive and ram expander.

...and WiNGs.

WiNGs is a very different OS which cannot use GEOS apps.  It only runs with a SuperCPU with SuperRAM.

GEOS 1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 (German C64 variant), 3.3 (another German variant?), 3.5 (for PAL Plus4).

Not really, unless you're talking about Apple and PC GEOS.

Aim for GEOS 2.0 as the most common out there and then start writing your apps with GeoProgrammer or use the GeoProgrammer upgrade (which only works with Wheels) called Concept.
