Anybody in the States have one for cheap?

Thanks.

P.S. I want to try this: http://www.csbruce.com/~csbruce/cbm/transactor/v6/i5/p036.html :)

Hey Airship, looks like you're in luck!  The article says that these 3K expanders can be bought at a reasonable price through stores that carry Commodore products!

Oh, sorry...  That was in 1986.   ;)

I'll have to check but I'm pretty sure I have one. If I do though it's one of the 3K + Super Expander cartridges. Would that meet your needs?

I'm assuming I'd have to unsolder the ROM to use it. Otherwise the 1541 would probably freak. Since my soldering skills have gone along the wayside over the years, I think I'll just wait until a 3K cart comes up. But thanks.

There must be other sources for the RAM chips...

I'm sure there probably are, Golan. But the idea of adding a connector to the interior of a 1541 so you can just slide an unmodified VIC-20 RAM expansion cartridge in there just appeals to my weird nature, I guess.

Just imagine - If CBM had added a couple of wires and a connector to the inside of a 1541 (total manufacturing cost: $1), back in the day we could have added the equivalent of a RAMBoard to our 1541s just by recycling an old VIC cart.  :O

Ah. Just re-read the article and it turns out you CAN use the Super Expander if you just disconnect the +5v supply from the ROM. :)

Seems a shame to waste one, though. I really hate the thought of scrapping old CBM stuff for parts if you don't have to. The beauty of this hack (and one of the reasons it appealed to me) is that the VIC 3K cart is entirely unchanged. I would add socket adapters to the 6502 and 7442 in the 1541 rather than soldering directly to the 1541 board if I ever get around to doing this mod. Less intrusive.

Fair enough. Looks like this is what you want.

I have some VIC20 16K ram expansions for sale, in fully working order and never used

I found a 3K expander on the eBays, but maybe someone here would be interested in your 16k expanders.
