Hi there,

If I wanted to make a nice GEOS setup what would I need ?

I thinking just the software required on unexpanded 64 or 128 here .. no SuperCPUs involved :-)

Hardware wise I've the 1541U with 4GB and it's 16MB REU so storing lots of D64's is not an issue.

Something I'd like to find are:

Patch to support more than a 512K REU
  RR-Net support ?  (wishful thinking ?)
Patch to support for "not real" 1541 devices (for things like the uIEC or IEC device on the 1541U where there is no 6502 emulated)
  StereoSID player
And any other must have patches/utilities/apps

Any got some good pointers ?

Regards

Mark

According to what I've read (and what Gideon Zweijtzer has said), the 1541U can only address up to 2 megs as a ram expander in GEOS.  GEOS has a limitation of 2 meg in the ram expander.

You need Configure 2.0r

Under GEOS?  Someone would have to write it.

Wheels would make everything considerably easier to use (and without the need of getting Configure 2.0r).

Interesting...  I've never heard of either of these.  Are they available for downloading somewhere?

Pokefinder has the GEOsid, but not the geostereosid listed.

GeoStereoSid was developed in the early 2000's in a series of GeoProgrammer/Concept classes for the SWRAP Chicago Commodore Club, the classes being led by none other than Maurice Randall.

So to get hold of Wheels ... is it a case of hoping that Maurice actually does reply, or a case of downloading it fromm other places ? (assuming it is actually out there)

I've not heard great things about Maurice lately ... concerns about orders not shipping, repairs being held onto etc.  All rumour mill stuff but still ....

Thanks for the handy pointers though :-)

Quite right.  But as Robert said, you can get Wheels elsewhere.

Be aware that Wheels 64/128 is now up to version 4.4 (back in 1998 when it was originally released, it started at v4.0).

Ha, I finally found Geos StereoSID player (other than what's on the disk at my home), and it's downloadable at

after you pay the $3.18 AU fee (hey, that makes it a commercial product!)

Yes that would very interesting!  I imagine this is supported by Wheels?  Can anyone confirm?

If this hasn't been done, I'm sure I could do it.  The problem is the way the KERNEL/Desktop handles disk drivers.  As we all should know, GEOS has different drivers for things like Input Devices and Printers, but not for Disk Drives!

I really don't know why Berkley designed their O.S. like this, except maybe because the disk drivers were integral to their copy-protection and disk-turbo software that they didn't want to be easy to hack.

I have a very good understanding how the GEOS disk drivers work (from both the computer side and disk drive side), having hacked GEOS back in the day (and learning a lot).  Also the "source code" is available as well.  But I still don't understand how the driver "files" are manipulated.  Mainly because they are not actual files but integrated into KERNAL / Desktop / Configure somehow??

Anyway, I understand the CMD hard drives came with special files to patch GEOS so the hard drives would work with GEOS.  As I also understand, the CMD hard drives did not have a 6502 CPU, so this was most likely accomplished through the JiffyDOS protocol.  This sounds almost the same as my JiffySoft 128 (see this thread or my webpage), except under GEOS.

Can anyone provide these patch files or a link?

I still have my original GEOS 128 2.0 disks and several apps.  It would be really cool to get these working with my uIEC.  Thanks!
I'm kupo for kupo nuts!

I have Wheels, but I haven't tried it with the uIEC.  I imagine that if GEOS fails with the uIEC, then Wheels will fail.

Are you asking for patch files to run GEOS on a uIEC?  That has not been accomplished yet.

No experience hacking the menuing system, just the turbo-loader / saver and copy protection.

What I would like to know is if anyone can provide the files / disks (or a link to such) that CMD Hard Drives provide for GEOS.

As I understand, the CMD Hard Drives came with special "patch files" that allowed them to work with GEOS.  By analyzing them, and building from my JiffySoft 128, I am confident I could produce a patch (disk drivers) that would allow GEOS to operate with modern mass storage devices, like the uIEC / MMC / 1541u... anything that supports JiffyDOS protocol.

Since I would REALLY like GEOS to have proper support for all those good things like 1541U, IDE64, MMCReplay I went and found the drivers for you ;-)

Also you might want to visit : http://members.elysium.pl/ytm/html/ciaide.html  On there is a design for an IDE interface and GEOS driver source for the interface.

I attached the source here as well :

So you'll have it done by friday then ? ;-)

Awesome!  Thanks RobertB and Mark Smith!  Now I just need to find the time.  Things have gone wild around here lately and I haven't had much Commie time :( (just check my forum stats).  If somebody doesn't beat me to it, I'll have it done by Christmas.  I'd love to promise it sooner, but too many passions with so little time!
