Just picked up a (plastic) 128D - anyone know where I can lay my hands on the 64k ram expansion for the VDC ?

commodorejohn

They turn up on eBay from time to time; I got mine for around $20 there. There doesn't seem to be one up for sale at the moment, though...

That BasicWayne fellow flogs ’em. I’m pretty sure his are fakes, but if they work, who cares?

I thought they were from alee650 in England.

I checked, and mine was definitely from BasicWayne. That was in March 2008, though; he might have stopped.

alee650 is the one who sold me the "Turbo Assembler 128" ROM that turned out to be undeclared 64-mode software, and may possibly have not even worked; certainly I was never able to get it to start, due in no small part to the complete absence of instructions beyond “plug this into your function ROM slot” that came with it. I seem to recall I tried to email them about it but I never heard back. Caveat emptor.

That's why I read alee650's item descriptions very carefully.  If there is nothing mentioned or shown in the photo, then I know there is nothing else.  Also if I have a question on an item, I ask alee650 before I order it.  Then I don't get into trouble with the order.

You may have to do it the other way -- unsolder out the old 4416's, put in sockets, and plug in 4464's.

That's my idea (but no sockets: I'm a rebel without a clue).  I'm ordering some 4464's.  Gonna cut out the 4416's and replace them.  64K VRAM... I'm gonna have so much fun this holiday season... I've always wanted 64K VRAM...

You know, I might just install the 4464's with a switch so I can change between 16K and 64K of VRAM.  For testing/hacking purposes of course...

Me with a soldering iron = BAD!!!!!!

There's one on eBay for $39.95 right now. That's what I spent for mine. No soldering, and it works like factory new. I love it.

I thought about buying a board, because my soldering isn't first class, but I was worried the RF Shield / Heat Sink wouldn't fit back on properly.  Not that RF Shielding is a big concern, more that those chips get really hot!

I've been running mine without the shield for a while with no problems.

Or add on heatsinks to those chips, as evidenced in the thread, "Heat sinking", at

I too, ordered mine from freeweb,
As basicwayne would not ship too Canada, (altough he does advertise his stuff on Ebay.ca ). , So no I wont even look at what basicwayne has. It looks like Freeweb offers the same stuff for a slightly less price also, so it looks like Freeweb wins my Vote and bussiness.

Yes, Wiz is a great guy, but he isn't here offering to solve Blacklords dilemma.  Hellion is the Cincinnati Commodore Computer Clubs Ebay Sales and Publicity Manager and an all around great guy.

His VDC expansion is also an original not a clone by alee650.  Nothing wrong with clones if you call them clones and know what you are getting.
