MIRKOSOFT

Hi!

My C128DCR has now no sound output. Don't understand why.
I have program which detects hardware in C128. There was always detected New SID 8580, now is there Old SID 6581.
Don't know how to check it better or where can be error...

Can anybody help me?

Thanks for every reply.

Well, I don't know how to check the chip itself for failure, but one quick and easy thing you can do is check to make sure it hasn't crept out of its socket. Just take the board out, find the SID, and press it into the socket. Press firmly, but be careful of the board; you don't want it to get warped or cracked!

Yes, I tried pressure on SID chip, but it helps not...

Really I was surprised - I turned on computer and sound works not.
Can I test it with Lightpen or Lightgun?
I think there are coordinates in SID...

I tried Lightgun and also C1351 mouse - in BASIC have coordinates from POT(x)...
and both not working...

Seems it that SID is broken?

So, it seems that SID is broken. I bought one SID 8580R5 and I want to replace it.

I need some advices to do this.
What I cannot and what I can - what can happens when I'm soldering it/need I soldering? etc.
Which solderer is best to use?

Thanks for all reports and advices

Are you sure your SID chip is soldered to the board? I've never seen that in any of the Commodores I've ever worked on. Usually they're socketed.

MIRKOSOFT

As you write, it's in socket, I tried hard to get it out... but I wasn't sure about damage of socket...

So here's simple Q: Can I use hard power?

Ah. You don't need to worry about damaging the socket, it's designed for easy removal. Usually what you have to watch out for is the pins on the chip, but if you're sure the chip is bad it's not so big a deal. You can buy a special tool for the job, but I find that if you take two flathead screwdrivers, slide them between the chip and the socket, and gently lever it out, that usually gets it to the point where you can finish the removal by hand with no ill effects. Just go carefully.

Sadly, it sounds like your SID has failed.  I only have flat C128 with original 6581 SID chip which requires 12VDC.  As I understand, the new 8580 SID chip uses lower voltage, so be carefull!  Let us know how you fixed the problem or if you still need help.

So, I had to buy one SID8580R5 and now is all ok... sound works!

But also thanks.
