Hey, everybody, take a look at the Teacher's PET at

Now why wasn't one donated to me back in the day?!  ;)

I recently picked up a Teachers' PET machine. The label on the back says 2001-8N. It was upgraded to 32K and BASIC4 ROMS, and came with Waterloo Structured BASIC in one of the option ROM sockets. Unlike the machine in the museum, this Teachers' PET has the standard graphics keyboard and NO built-in cassette unit. It has a 9" green-screen monitor. The front label is the same as the museum one, except it is on a plastic bezel. Cosmetically it's in great shape.

Do you have a photograph of it that you can share?

Mmm, nice!  Like I told SMJ, if somebody can replicate that Teacher's PET label, we could slap the faux label onto regular PET 2001s.  :)

NO! NO! NO! :(

RobertB

Then there was the other idea to turn thoroughly broken PET 4032s into Educator 64s with all the metal modifications made for that C64 keyboard.  :)

             Yes!

It still won't be a real Educator64... or Teachers' PET... but I guess provided no working PET is harmed and you don't try to pass it off as the "real thing" then I guess it's okay.

Personally, I'd love to see an "Educator 64-D-SK".. A C64 in a PET-SK case with built-in drives and a colour monitor ;-)
Or, better yet, an Educator 128-D-SK!

I've been looking, but can't find a colour monitor that would fit in the SK's monitor housing.

Yeah, they would be "creative" hacks.

Fitting a 128 keyboard into the casing would be a challenge!  :)

If you find a source, let us know.  Hmm, those filmmakers who are following me... perhaps they would know where such monitors exist in their professional industry.

When I visited Seattle, Washington in June, SMJ showed me the Telephone Museum.  Yeah, lots of solenoids, other electro-mechanical parts, and even computers -- A&TT computers and a Timex TI-80 (what's that doing there?  Where were the Commodores?!).  He and his wife treated me to a nice seafood dinner by the Seattle Waterfront.  And the highlight of the trip was getting to see his Teacher's PET in operation.  Better yet, it was to see the Teacher's PET in his DeLorean.  A classic within a classic!  :)

Here is a closer view of SMJ's Teacher's PET - this time not in the DeLorean.  ;)  (Oh, the black object in the upper right corner of the table is my Bronica GS-1 medium format film camera.)

Nice, but is there any real difference between the TP and a regular 2001, other than the obvious label change?, Did it have ports to connect to other pets or such?

At first glance, not that I can tell.  To really see if there are any differences, I'd have to place my chicklet-keyed PET 2001 next to SMJ's Teacher's PET.  Either I go up to Seattle, or he comes down to California.  ;)

Connect a PET to a PET?  I don't understand.

Do you want to network them?

Please excuse me, it could be just a figment of my crazy memory, but I seem to recall "networking" type boxes from CBM that could connect all the PETS in the Classroom up to the Teacher's machine (Not sure how or what protocol etc)because it was only the Teacher's machine that had a floppy drive or a printer hooked too it.
I probably am totaly out to lunch on this though, but I could swear I did see something like that at one time..

There have been boxes to connect several CBM to one drive (or one printer).

Maybe something like this: http://www.commodore.ca/gallery/hardware/softbox_compute_setp82.jpg

Yes, something like a PET-Switch (MBS-xxxx) but that one doesn't require a master computer to control the peripherals. Perhaps in a network the Teacher's PET could be used to allow or reject requests to print to avoid wasting paper.

2 things.

1. I love the power supply inside.  It's so simple... a thing of beauty.  (The board layout is simplisticly eligant too)

2. In the next to the last photo (showing the back of the monitor), what are those devices?  The look like small speakers, but facing into the monitor, instead of away... well if they are speakers, then I guess it might make it seem like the sounds are coming from inside the screen...

I don't know much about PETs expect for goofing around in VICE.  When I was in elementary school, we toured the local high school and I saw some PETs, but by the time I was in middle school, the school district had upgraded to C64s, and by the time I was in high school they had AppleIIs and IBM PCs (saddly no Amigas).
I'm kupo for kupo nuts!

They are strange-looking, add-on reset switches.
