1351 mouse question

Hi guys.  So I recently picked up a 1351 that seems to work great and is in great cosmetic condition.  I have tested it with my GEOS 2.0 setup in proportional mode.  I have also tested it in joystick mode and used it to play Death Knights of Krynn for a while.

But it seems to have a quirk.  If it's plugged into joystick port #1 - upon bootup I can use the mouse to create "effects" in the screen editor (but only if I move the mouse and press the buttons).  Make the cursor jump around a bit, produce character outputs, etc. If I boot it in joystick mode (in port #1) this doesn't happen.  It also doesn't seem to happen in joystick port #2.

Any thoughts?

Tom

Update: I have another question. If I boot my 128D into 128 mode, put my 1351 in joystick mode and GO64 into 64 mode to play a game,  it appears that the 1351 is still in joystick emulation mode.  Is this true in general?

Hi Tom!

Misc characters at pressing button is ok, 1351 uses some parts of $DC01.
Aout 64 mode don't know

Commodore 64 was great, Commodore 128 is bigger, better, faster and more!!!

The mouse will not "reset" to proportional mode when you switch to C64 mode or when you press reset to get back into C128 mode.

This is a power-up feature of the mouse.  It activates when the mouse first gets power: when you plug the mouse into the computer, or if the mouse is already plugged in, when you power on the computer.

Because reset and mode changes of the computer do not eliminate power to the mouse, the mouse will remain in same joystick/proportional mode.

Also, joystick port #1 shares some common connections with the keyboard, explaining the effects you noted.
x86?  We ain't got no x86.  We don't need no stinking x86!

Thanks for the information, guys.  I appreciate it.

Dr V.,
or anyone else. I recently also picked up a 1351 Mouse (not 1350) and noticed that when I plug it into either the C64 or C128(in C64 mode) that it disables certain characters on the keyboard (both Joyport 1 and 2)...is this normal?

Also, in C128 native mode, the on-screen basic cursor just goes nuts (move and has random characters) constantly.  This is when plugged into Joy port 1.

Is this normal (it's been to long for me to remember those days).   It does  seem to work fine in joystick mode when in a game.  Just concerned about what its doing when plugged in and just in basic mode. I don't have GEOS64 or 128 to test it in at the moment.

If the mouse is in proportional mode, you shouldn't have any problems in either port 1 or port 2, unless you press one of the buttons.

In joystick emulation mode, you can have problems with the keyboard no matter which port you use whenever you move the mouse or press a button.  In port 1, you will have "random" characters appear; the same thing as if you plugged a joystick in and moved the stick.

I figured out my problem with my *supposed* 1351 mouse.  Turns out it's an Amiga tank mouse (which looks just like the 1351).  The seller refuses to answer my emails and ebay is not willing to do anything about it, even though it was falsely advertised.  Beware.  I see someone else on ebay selling off  Amiga mice as 1351 mice.  That sort of work but they cause all kinds of havok with the keyboard controls and such.

Ack!  An Amiga 1352 mouse does not work on the C64/128, except for one or two programs which specify that they can handle an Amiga mouse.  FWIW, a 1351 mouse has a plastic sub-mini D connector going into the port, and the Amiga 1352 mouse has a shiny metal band wrapped around the sub-mini D connector.

Unfortunately, the same thing happened to me on ebay about a year ago.  Someone pawned off an amiga mouse as a 1351.

Yep, educating oneself about the hardware sure saves headache.  But then again, I guess that's how we learn.

I've got an Amiga mouse but no Amiga! It has a right-angle connector. It's been a long time, but I believe that means it's from an A1000. Am I right?

Justice served Ebay ruled in my favor and made the seller refund my money!  It's funny how many bogus 1351 adds are on there lately!
