1581 disks

Can the 1581 use High density disks or just DSDD disks?  I have a 1571 too, but disks are all but impossible to find for them.

I use high density disks in mine with no problem.  However, I've noticed more and more the quality is lacking so always make that backup if you do use them as I have them go bad quite often.  I now typically import all mine 1581 disks into .d81 files for safe keeping anyways.

My 1581's will format the HD disks but when I try to write or read from them, the info is messed up. I gave up on HD and just stick with DD disks. I find packs of them all the time at garage sales, flea markets, second hand stores and of course on ebay.If you want your info safe its best to stick with DD disks no matter what anyone else may say. As for finding 5.25" floppies, you can find brand new packs of them on ebay for cheap. Best to stock up now as they arent mass producing them anymore and they are only bound to go up in price eventually.

This site stocks NOS as well (prices tend to be a bit all over the place - http://www.oldsoftware.com/index.html.

There's a couple of manufacturers still making new stock as well, but you have to buy large quantities.

The site below lists about 15 or 20 lots of disks.  Except for the 1 lot with a 3.5 specification, all
of the lots have no disk size specified.  You
have to request extra disk size info regarding
a particular lot from the contact.  The same
request could also ask about shipping charges.
Make sure you aren't buying 8.5" disks.
