Well, the same guy who sold the SuperCPU 128 for $1125 also got $405 for an FD 2000, so it seems Commodore collectors have a lot of money to throw around these days. It wouldn't surprise me anymore if this FD 4000 manages to sell at its listed price.

Stop the madness! We're not talking about one-of-a-kind items here. They're mass produced and what makes this that much more perplexing, they can be reproduced with no discernible differences to the original. These aren't Ming Dynasty vases. Everyone needs to take a breath.

I agree that it's mad to pay these sort of prices for a C64, 1541-ii floppy drive etc, but some of these items like a SuperCPU, CMD-HDD, RAMlink are hard to come by down under.

True, some of these are easy to reproduce. In fact, I'm convinced that most of the items from this eBay seller are reproductions and not the originals.

However, the startup cost incolved to mass produce a SuperCPU, CMD-HDD and RAMlink wouldn't be peanuts.

The 128 VDC upgrade is dated (on the board) 1987 & is identical to the picture of the same thing on the cover of RUN (December 1991). So he's either found some NOS or is reproducing them exactly or is too lazy to photo his own article,

When the PCB design is created, it's easy to specify any date you want.

Here's my experience with some of these eBay items that I've purchased as I was a regular customer expanding my Commodore collection. When the cartridge backer v2 item 160090064875 was first listed on eBay, I received an e-mail from the seller advising me that he only had four of these. Two were sold outside eBay, one was listed, and the other he would keep. I thought that this would be a rare item to purchase and wasn't surprised to see that the bidding went off.

I was shocked when it hit 129.77 pounds! I was then offered a second chance offer as the seller all of a sudden had another spare item. I declined the offer but noticed a number of other users purchasing this item with crazy bids. I guess they all just didn't want to miss out thinking that it's rare item. Then I noticed that it was being listed every week. Many months later this item is still listed at a fraction of the cost. Having purchased one myself, I can tell you that the parts required to build this cost less than 5 pounds. The PCB design is also very simple. The documentation is photocopied so I highly doubt that it was new old stock.

Same goes for many "factory new" software items like 250089406210, 250088996295, 160048065224 and 160090065766. I've purchased these from eBay but have since sourced original copies that shown the expected aging with time. While they look similar, the original packaging and documentation is different. They are good copies though.

I don't have a problem with items like this being on eBay, as it gives Commodore users an opportunity to own obsolete hardware/software no longer being manufactured by the original companies. However, buyers should be very carefull when bidding.

It looks like there's a market for these things then - especially if they can be produced & sold cheaply rather than offering them as "rare" through eBay.

I've bought from that Ebay seller before and will say that he/she is pretty good, I've had two DOA's from him/her and they were replaced with zero fuss and I got to keep the dead ones ... no idea where he gets the toys from, next time I'm in the UK I might track him down and beat the info from him :-)

Don't get me wrong. I've purchased a number of items and the service provided is excellent.

Actually, this was listed as "Buy It Now" for $1,050.  And someone did buy it.  I could never imagine paying over a thousand dollars for a 3.5" floppy drive!  Even if it uses ED disks...  It's still just a floppy drive!!!  :förvånad:
