From an old post on C.S.C:

QuoteNot quite the same as demos, but.. I do have on my Fun Pack 128 disk from
Run Magazine a few graphic 80 column games. Very little es explained
technically in the manual about how it was done. Some games use the text
screen and redefine some characters to look like objects. I  think that is
how the Star Trek 128 game in the public domain is done. The Enterprise is
a character that has been edited and redefined. (Note ST 128 is not on
the disk).

Some games use the 80 column bitmapped screen.  For Death Quadrant by
Charles Orcutt: "It contains emulated sprites, and because there can be
over 20 different moving objects (including fire power), the animation
appears to outperform real sprites..."
Does anyone have this disk?

Mangelore

Yes,  I have it. Would you like a d64 image?

nikoniko

That would be great if you don't mind. Could you mail it to michael@furthervoyages.com when you have a chance?

Thanks, I appreciate it.

Gumpy

Death Quadrant, and the other 80 columns don't work in Win Vice. :gråta:
The VDC emulation isn't very good, so they don't work.

nikoniko

Do you still have it, Gumpy? If so, I'd love to have a copy if you don't mind sharing it. Even if it doesn't run on VICE, maybe I'll get a chance to run it on a real machine sometime.

Yeah, it's a shame VICE's VDC emulation isn't up to every challenge, but few people ever knew the VDC very well, and even fewer ever got involved with improving VICE's 128 support. Most, I'd guess, are no longer 8-bit enthusiasts, but among those who are left, I imagine limitations of time, interest or ability get in the way. Plus, understanding the VDC doesn't necessarily lend itself to understanding how to craft an emulation, so it really takes a certain kind of person to make a project like this work.

Even so, VICE works surprisingly well in some cases.

Hi,

Sorry for the delay. I'm converting it to D64 file format now.
Will email shortly.

Cheers

Ah, no problem. If I'm not mistaken, I believe I heard something about a FAM expansion, so I figured you probably had your hands full with the upgrade. ;)

Yes, indeed. :)

It's our first baby so we're still learning!

nikoniko

You're right, Gumpy. They sure don't work. :/

But I've set VICE to log all accesses to the VDC and I'm going to try them again, so maybe we can find out exactly why they don't work.

Silicebit

I would like see the sprites emulation on the 80 columns screen of my C128 :förvånad:, I'll be very grateful if anyone send me Death Quadrant to burrosoft@terra.es

Thanks in advance!.

nikoniko

Silicebit, I just sent it to you. Lance, do you want a copy of the Fun Pack to put up here?

Yes please

Strange...

These games magically decided to work when I ran a custom compile of WinVICE with VDC logging turned on. Then they continued to work even after I switched back to the original executable. Previously when I tried to run them I just got some sound and a corrupted text screen.

Gumpy

Does anybody have .d64 images of this? I don't have mine anymore, I accidentally lost them while moving files around. :-(

Just a little historical aside:

In the old Ohio Scientific Challenger IP (a PET clone) character set, there were four standard characters dedicated to an image of the starship Enterprise: front and back halves moving left, and a pair moving right.

I had a lot of fun with those. :)

Great, this is really new for me!  :D

The 40 column games doesn't work on Vice 2.0 (don't know why they always crash) but the 80 column games are working fine.
Especially Death Quadrant is a really nice game (after you understand how to control the star ship).
I'll try it on a real machine too ...

I haven't visited this site in awhile, and I am still looking for FunPak 128.

I was excited to see your link for downloading it, but I just clicked on the link and got the elitebbs webpage with a "Page Not Found. The Page "funpak" was not found." message. :-(

Do you still have FunPak, and if so, could you re-upload it someplace or email me the disk images? Thank you very much.

Blacklord

Yep - I'm in the process of putting the FTP server back up, everything will be there - needs a couple of days more work first.
