General chat / Re: 5.25 diskettes for 1571

Athana is your best bet for new, high quality DSDD floppy disks. Alternatively, you can always find them for sale on eBay, but as with everything on eBay, the quality of what you'll get is kind of hit and miss.

If you are close to land, they can helicopter you out of there.  ;)

While that may be physically possible, I doubt they'll do that for me.  :P

I just added a new way to connect to both Cottonwood BBS and Cottonwood II.  You can now connect from a web browser with FlashTerm.  This is a great way to connect that does not require any additional software to be installed other than a flash-capable browser, perfect for when you're using a public computer or are behind a firewall that has ports 23 and 6400 blocked (as is the case for me at work).  The downside is that FlashTerm, at present, does not have PETSCII support, so you'll be stuck in ASCII mode.  Still, it's better than nothing!  :)

To connect using FlashTerm, just go to the following addresses:

To connect to Cottonwood BBS:
http://cottonwood.servebbs.com/cottonwood

To connect to Cottonwood II:
http://cottonwood.servebbs.com/cottonwoodii

Ah, so that's where the Navy is moving you this time.  Not too far for another shot at CommVEx another year.

Yes!  Unfortunately, I'll be stationed on a ship...  So what events I'll be able to attend will be determined by the ship's schedule.  I can't exactly go to Las Vegas if I'm in the middle of the Pacific Ocean...  ;)

I always hate to see the end of an era, but I'm glad you're keeping them alive via telnet.

I'm still keeping all the Borderline files in tact...  I'll be moving to the San Diego area in December.  If I have enough room in my new house for an additional Commodore setup, and if there seems to be sufficient interest, I'd definintely consider bringing Borderline back online.

Quote from: airship on July 09, 2010, 05:54 AMYou probably don't hear this often enough: thanks for your service to your country, and for your service to the Commodore community.

Thanks... It's always nice to be appreciated.  :)

Just curious... Why would you not want JiffyDOS for the internal 1571 in your 128D?

Heh, not the ones I had Ray Carlsen put the sockets in.

Interesting... I have yet to come across a 1581 that didn't already have the ROM in a socket.

Yes, CommodoreJohn is right.  The standard commands will still work and yes, everything will be much faster, whether you use the JiffyDOS commands or not.

For the past few years, I've been running what has been, for most of that time, the only Commodore-run dial-up BBS anywhere in the world.  Borderline BBS has been running on a C64 in my home in southern California, and while it has never received a huge volume of calls, it has had calls from all over the world.  People have called in from places like Australia, the Netherlands, and even Israel.  I always said that I'd keep it up and running as long as people continued to call.  Well, for the past two weeks, Borderline BBS has not had a single caller.  I hate to keep equipment up and running if no one is going to use it, so I've decided to make a change.  As of today, Borderline BBS has been taken offline, indefintely.  I may bring it back online in the future if there seems to be interest, but for now, it's been taken down.

I have, however, brought a new BBS online.  It's called Cottonwood II, and it's running on Color 64 v7.36 software.  I recently discovered a way to get Color 64 v7.xx and earlier running via Telnet, so that's what I've done.  I've been testing this setup for the past couple weeks, and it's been running in place of Cottonwood BBS.  The setup is rock solid, and I've decided to run both Cottonwood BBS and Cottonwood II via Telnet simultaneously.  Cottonwood BBS, which runs on All American BBS software, is now on the standard Telnet port 23.  The "new and improved" Cottonwood II is now running on port 6400.  New users are always welcome, and I hope everyone will check out both of these BBSs.
Here are the addresses:

Cottonwood BBS
cottonwood.servebbs.com

Cottonwood II
cottonwood.servebbs.com:6400
(use a space in lieu of the colon if you're using CGTERM)

New BBS setup photos and information have been posted on the Cottonwood Informational Website at http://cottonwood.servebbs.com

Interesting that the required TEAC 5.25" model FD55GFR drive is now selling for between $7 and $150 on the surplus market, depending on where you look. :)

I think you may have mis-read that... The website says, "It has been tested to work well with the TEAC FD-55GFR drive and should also work with most other 5.25" drives."

It also says that the controller can only be used to read from disks; it can't write to disks.  So I guess you can make d64 images of 1541 floppies, but you can't write 1541 floppies from d64 images.  Writing to floppies from disk images is what I use my XE1541 cable for much more often than writing images of floppies.  I think I'll stick with my setup.  ;)

The ACUG website is still up, too...  but some of the info on it is now outdated.  I hope to have that fixed soon.

Andrew, you're getting rid of your goodies, the Promenade C1 clone and the Stereo SID cartridge clone?  Why?

I thought you were enjoying them,

I enjoyed them, don't really use them anymore, so I thought someone else might enjoy them...  Plus, I need the cash...  ;)

I have the bin file...  Send me your e-mail address in a private message here, and I'll send it to you.  :)

Why would you trade ? this one looks to be in excelllent condition!

He's talking about trading this one for his original one that he sould a couple years ago.  I can totally understand that...  :)

Welcome to the forum, Roushinator.  I'd definately recommend adding JiffyDOS to your system, as well as adding a fan.  You can find the instructions for adding a fan to a 128DCR here:  http://personalpages.tds.net/~rcarlsen/cbm/128dfan.txt

Well, I'll try to make it up there for either the March or April meeting...  I'd like to take you up on your offer from a year ago to loan me your LTK so I can re-familiarize myself with it to give a demonstration at CommVEx.  I told you a month or two ago that it looked like I was going to be able to get one of my own... well, that didn't pan out.

Software / Re: Looking for good disc-copy software

Robert, the Pokefinder hits are not the CMD FCOPY program... Looks like a German program made for the VC-1541.  I did some hunting, and you can find FCOPY in this compilation of CMD utility disks:

I've actually never used this "feature" of the 1581... I honestly never had a need for it on an 800KB disk.
