New at this CP/M

OK. I finally have my system configured after I acquired a 1902 monitor. I now have a 1571 and a 1581. When I boot the CPU with a CP/M boot floppy in the 1571, It attempts to boot but comes up with an error:

CP/M error on A: Disk I/O
BDDS function=15 File=CCP

Can you help?

Also, does the 1581 operations act any different than the 1571? I.E., if I had a CP/M 1581 boot diskette would it load from the 1581 disk drive? I assume it would.

I have a C/D with several CBM utilities on it. How do I write them to a 1581 diskette format on my PC that the 128 can read? I assume Red Ryder. Is that loaded on the PC or 128?

Actually, where can I find a manual that explains basic user operations such as booting, switching from CP/M to DOS or whatever other ops sys the 128 can run. How do I switch from 40 to 80 column display?

Right forum ... maybe we're just stumped :-)

I can maybe guess some answers for you:

1581 and CP/M = Yes it's supported, but have to have a newish version that lists it as supported (might be in the downloads section here, otherwise Google it)

CP/M tutorial - in this forum I think

Booting error - could be a bad disk, or an old version of CP/M that doesn't like something it sees in your 128 ?

80 column mode - press the 40/80 Display button and boot with that depressed :-)

Lance has a GREAT CP/M downloads section here. Check it out. I know he's got the latest version of CP/M, as well as an enhanced version with ZP/M and other stuff. If I remember right, there's even a special 1581 disk, isn't there, Lance?

Thanks for the  replies! Good info for me. One thing. I don't have my C128 "hooked" to the internet. My PC is. I can download files but how do I use the files loaded to a diskette created on the PC as the C128 and PC are not file structure compatible? Is that where "Red Ryder" (sp) comes in? If so, which system is it loaded to? Any operational documentation available on the internet? Sorry for so many "I don't know I'm doing"...well I don't.:/

There is, but difficult to find - the CP/M stuff is still under the old download manager which is no longer directly linked to. Guess I really should pull my finger out & move the stuff over to where it should be.

I've actually got around a gig or so of CP/M stuff that's not available for download - mostly from various collections that I've stumbled on over the last 25 years, I should try to make some sense out of it all & put it up.

It sounds like you need a C128 system guide. I have an extra one if you don't have one.

What does D81 image mean? What is the file used for? Is this the boot code that would reside on a 1581 diskette?

It's a 'disk image' for a 1581. It can be used in VICE or another C128 emulator just as it is, but there is also software for the C64 that will extract it and write it to a 1581 disk for you.
