128D timing

Just came across this in the Wikipedia entry for MMC64:

The cartridge has a file browser that is launched automatically upon start, although the auto-launch feature allows for different file browsers. It can execute .PRG files on the flash media right from the file browser and write .d64 disk image files to disk, although this is very slow with the built-in diskwriter, so most people use a faster plugin (software download link), although this plugin does not work on metal C128Ds due to timing issues. (emphasis mine)

What was changed with the later model 128Ds that affects timing?

That's weird. I've been using that plugin with my metal case C128D and the MMC64 (BIOS 1.04) without any problems... I wonder if my Datel 3-slot cartridge port expander is assisting with the timing in some way???

Can you try it without the Datel? I have a 128D in the metal case, but not an MMC64. This is the first I've heard of things working in other 128 models but not the 128D-CR.
